September is National Cholesterol Education Month

September is National Cholesterol Education Month, a good time to get your blood cholesterol checked and take steps to lower it if it is high. National Cholesterol Education Month is also a good time to learn about lipid profiles and about food and lifestyle choices that help you reach personal cholesterol goals.

High blood cholesterol affects over 65 million Americans. It is a serious condition that increases your risk for heart disease. The higher your cholesterol level, the greater the risk. You can have high cholesterol and not know it. Lowering cholesterol levels that are too high lessens your risk for developing heart disease and reduces the chance of having a heart attack or dying of heart disease.

PCAT Safety Awareness Campaign

September 2011: Are you a role model for School Zone Safety?

Across the United States, schools are heavily engaged with pint-sized pedestrians and vehicles. When an emergency and medical transportation vehicle enters a school zone, children, parents and teachers notice. Your actions and leadership can establish a safer traffic environment around schools and playgrounds. Your first priority is to operate your vehicle safely. School zone driving puts your safe habits on display.

Here are some considerations about school children...

~ They are smaller than adults and less visible to motorists; they are easily hidden behind parked vehicles, trees, shrubs, etc.

~ They do not intuitively understand the habits of drivers or the operational characteristics of a motor vehicle.

~ Kids have difficulty judging distance and the speed of oncoming traffic; they are unable to accurately predict if it is safe to cross. This is why children are inclined to run across the street.

~ They do not naturally use their peripheral vision. Children in grades K-3 have slower reaction times than older children and adults in identifying relevant objects in their peripheral vision.

~ They do not automatically use sound to determine traffic location, and must be taught to do so.

~ They are often restless, impatient and focused on the moment. They have trouble waiting for things like traffic lights or cars heading in their direction. They lack impulse control and are present-oriented.

~ They have been taught that people driving emergency vehicles are friendly and will look out for them.

So remember, schools are open. Slowing down and driving safely is not enough. You must set an example for safety in school zones.
